Bathrooms of Melbourne: Meeting Corey Ashford

After 15 years in retail and design, it was only a matter of time until Corey Ashford started his own homewares line, creating purpose-designed lifestyle pieces that engage all the senses. kit: stopped by his tranquil Richmond home to talk form, function, and finding a bit of romance in our everyday.
Brass oyster incense holders, marble canelé candle sticks, chrome coasters… Where do you find inspiration for your designs? And can you share a sneak peek of what’s next?

I like everything to look like it's been plucked from a French still life. The idea that all my pieces could be painted and look right at home. Interpreting those classic French aesthetics, I take inspiration and then mould them softly into something permanent. Building on this, we’re soon introducing small marble madeleine dishes — an object based on the French cake for a bit of fun.

Given your penchant for crafting beautiful objects that make the everyday a little more interesting, how does striking design transform mundane experiences, like washing your hands with the kit: RE:SET Hand Wash & Lotion?

I think we should all romanticise our lives more. Use those beautiful European linen napkins at dinner. Put an incense stick in a beautiful object. Wash your hands with the nice stuff. Make those everyday experiences as beautiful as they can be. Why not!

Living and creating in Melbourne, how does the city’s creative scene influence your design philosophy?

I think in Melbourne no one wants to see you fail, everyone wants to prop you up and help you. It’s really encouraging and easy to just be inspired by everyone around me.

Favourite place in Melbourne to go to for a reset?

I go to Comma in Richmond once a month for the bath house and a massage. As soon as you walk in, it is completely quiet and secluded, and you feel like you're a million miles away. Taking that time to completely disconnect and get in tune with your mind and body, that stillness, that’s a reset for me.

In three words, how would you describe your home aesthetic?

Tranquil. Textile. Relaxing.

Talk to us about your bathroom, what do we find in here?

Our house is an 1800s build, so the bathroom is very of that time. Because we don't have a lot of space, it’s quite considered. You will always find a selection of skincare and self-care that’s beautifully scented and natural. We also always play music in the bathroom, jazz or a little bit of French rap.

And your nighttime skincare routine?

I'm a big double cleanser, I looove a double cleanse. Skincare is an opportunity to put yourself first, to experience beautiful products and scents, it’s a nourishing ritual every night.

What’s the best bathroom you’ve been to? What makes it special?

I love the bathroom in the Bowery Hotel in New York. They've got a really deep sunken tub by the window and you can just sit in a hot bath and watch the city streets. Coming off that long flight, sitting there and getting a first little glimpse into the city. It’s really special.

Tell us about the weirdest thing you have in your home?

Jason and I have a really wacky shell collection, we've probably got over 50 shells throughout the house and in storage. I think it's amazing how nature can create something so exceptionally intricate, just on its own with no intervention.
